Local Flaps

A flap is a piece of tissue that carries with it a blood supply. In contrast to a skin graft, it does not rely upon the vascularity of the defect for healing and usually gives a better long-term cosmetic effect than skin grafts (either full- or split-thickness). The ability to move a piece of tissue from an adjacent area relies upon the inherent skin laxity of the area and as such this technique is limited in areas of the body where excess skin is limited, for example the back of the hand or the scalp. This is because the area from which the flap was taken is sutured wholly or partly, depending upon the type of local flap used. Mr Price will advise you regarding the appropriateness of using a local flap for your reconstruction.
