Botulinium Injections
Botulinum toxin is a purified form of a specific neuromuscular blocking agent. It acts by stopping the signal from the nerve to the muscle, thereby preventing the muscle from contracting. When used very carefully, this can minimise the appearance of furrows and wrinkles, particularly on the forehead and between the eyebrows. Botulinium injections can also be used for other applications, for example sweating under the armpits or for certain neuromuscular disorders.
Botulinium injections are performed in the following manner. In clinic, Mr Price will perform a full assessment in order to work out where you would receive maximal benefit from the injection. The solution is injected in very small quantities into the muscles that are creating the furrows. Gentle dabbing of the injection sites may be required but they should not be massaged or rubbed in any way – this runs the risk of spreading the botulinium into the wrong areas.
After the procedure, you may experience slight redness and/or bruising. There will be no immediate effect upon your wrinkles but they should start to disappear over the next few days, with maximum effect about 2-3 weeks later. The muscle recovers after several months and so the injections may need repeating after 3-6 months to maintain benefit.
Because the injection prevents muscles from working, recognised problems with the procedure include droopiness of the eyebrow (if injected to the forehead) and ‘sad’ or ‘surprised’ expressions, depending upon whether the eyebrow movement is weakened. Both of these wear off at the same time as the other injections, so they are not permanent.
